Beyond the Box is designed to eliminate barriers to college application completion for reentry individuals who have previous encounters with the justice system. In 2011, about 60 percent of individuals behind bars were minorities and national data supports the finding that criminal record exclusions have a disparate impact based on race and national origin.
The U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission has stated that this disparate impact violates the Civil Rights Act and can be applied to education.
