Theodore “Ted” K. Miller, 84, of Athens, Georgia passed away Saturday, August 20, 2016.
Born January 1, 1932 in Iowa City, IA, Ted was the son of the late George E. Miller and Grace Bute Miller of Goshen, IN. He was preceded in death by his brother Jack Bute Miller (Carolyn) of Caledonia, IL. He is survived by his sister Margaret Miller Hoff (David) of Las Vegas, NV. Additional survivors include his wife of 60 years (celebrated on Aug 4, 2016) Gay Smith Miller; daughters Kimberly Miller Wentworth (Robert) of Athens, GA, Tamara Miller Bowden of Auburn, AL, and Nicole Miller Barrett (Skip) of Portland, OR; grandchildren Benjamin David Wentworth (Angellica) of Statesboro, GA, Joseph Tyler Bowden of Miami Beach, FL, Jonathan Robert Wentworth (Katelynn) of Statham, GA and Christina Marie Wentworth of Athens, GA; and Great Granddaughter, Eleanor Piper Wentworth of Statham, GA.
Ted was a 1949 graduate of Goshen High School, and a Veteran of the United States Army, having served in Germany in the US Army of Occupation. He earned two degrees from Ball State University in Muncie, IN. He began his 35-year career at the University of Georgia (UGA) as a professor in the Department of Counseling and Student Development Services. He is often referred to within higher education as one of the founding fathers of Student Affairs. He retired from the University of Georgia as Professor Emeritus (1997). A prolific writer and speaker he presented numerous lectures, keynote speeches, and professional workshops and seminars throughout the US and beyond including Puerto Rico, Hong Kong, Taiwan, Canada, Czech Republic, and the Philippines. During his 40+ years in higher education he attained many professional accomplishments including being founding president of the Georgia College Personnel Association (GCPA), president of the American College Personnel Association (ACPA), and founding president of the Council for the Advancement of Standards in Higher Education (CAS). Perhaps most well known for his efforts benefiting CAS, the association honored him by establishing the annual CAS Ted K. Miller Award for Excellence. In 1988 former UGA President, Charles Knapp, selected him to direct the University’s Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS) Accreditation Reaffirmation Self-Study. He also was honored to advise and guide the study and research of more than 50 doctoral and several hundred master’s students from 1962 to 1997.
