Dear Friends and Colleagues,

I want to take this opportunity to share some exciting information with you.  I have partnered with ACPA—College Student Educators International to create a brand new training platform, Compliance U™.  This platform will provide critical compliance-oriented law and policy training to student affairs administrators (and others) in a cost-effective way.  Training modules in Compliance U™ are sequenced: each module provides essential information, offers opportunity for skill development, and is assessed.

Title IX is one compliance pathway that has continued to be at the forefront of the training needs of the field.  Therefore, we have chosen Title IX as our inaugural pathway.  You will begin your journey in Compliance U™ with a basic, foundational module that serves as the prerequisite module for all of Compliance U™—Compliance 101.  After completing Compliance 101, you will be ready to proceed to Title IX 101, a basic-level module.  Even if you have achieved intermediate or advanced levels of knowledge and skill in Title IX work, we ask you to complete the video-based Title IX 101.  The approach to Title IX training in Compliance U™ will be different from any training you may have received before and this prerequisite for intermediate and advanced training will be essential to ensure all participants have common foundations.  If you train others yourself, you will find Title IX 101 helpful in that work, too.

Title IX 201, an intermediate module, will be offered live in Orlando, Florida on October 20 – 22, 2017 at the Wyndham Lake Buena Vista Resort, within walking distance of Disney Springs

During the 2.5 days of instruction in Title IX 201, we will delve deeper into intermediate-level issues in Title IX compliance.  For more information, or to register, please visit http://www.myacpa.org/search/site/compliance%20u.  Space is limited.

Those who register for Title IX 201 will be given coupons to view and complete Compliance 101 and Title IX 101 FOR FREE!  We will expect you to complete the prerequisites, Compliance 101 and Title IX 101 before you arrive to the live event.

Next, I have been talking a lot lately—especially since the events in Charlottesville—about First Amendment issues.   So, we have decided to offer a half-day session on the afternoon of October 22 from 1:00 – 4:30 pm on Extreme Expression: Managing Protests, Controversial Speakers and Activism in the Wake of Charlottesville.  This session will take place in Orlando immediately following Title IX 201.  Those who attend Title IX 201 will be able to attend this bonus session at no additional cost!

Finally, I would invite you to take a look at all Compliance U™ will have to offer by visitinghttp://complianceu.myacpa.org/index.php/courses-of-study/.  While this platform is still in development, I think you will be pleased to see the future offerings we have planned—from disability law, to FERPA and privacy law, to Clery Act compliance.  There are indeed many pathways to compliance!  Compliance U™ offers a much-needed educational resource for our field.  Think of Compliance U™ as a “law school” without a J.D. program for people who want to work with legal and compliance issues on campus, but do not seek to practice law.  Compliance U™ may be particularly appealing for individuals who have completed some or all of a law school curriculum and are hoping for a “J.D. advantage” career.  As those individuals know, much of what we need to know for operational compliance work is not taught in law school, and practicing law is not the best pathway for everyone with strong legal skills.

I would like to extend a special thank you to the staff at ACPA and their Executive Director, Cindi Love, and Dan Stevens at WorkerBee.TV, for making Compliance U™ a reality!  In many ways, the launch of Compliance U™ is a dream come true for me—a new way to develop higher learning and legal training.

And as always, I would like to thank you for your continued interest in and support of my work, and for all that you do for the students on your campuses.

Here’s to the start of a great semester!

Peter Lake
