The ACPA Generativity Project was created to document the history of ACPA and the student affairs profession. This project brought together a group of esteemed leaders from the profession to participate in face-to-face interviews with former ACPA President Dr. Dennis C. Roberts (1985-1986). Interviews were conducted with the following trailblazers of the profession:

  • Esther Lloyd-Jones, ACPA President (1935-1937) Assistant Professor, Teacher’s College of Columbia University (New York)
  • Art Chickering, author of Education and Identity (1969 & 1993) Professor, George Mason University (Virginia) and Goddard College (Vermont)
  • Melvene D. Hardee, ACPA President (1962-1963) Professor, Florida State University
  • Nevitt Sanford, author of American College (1962) Professor, Harvard University (Massachusetts) and University of California – Berkeley

As 2012 celebrates the 75th anniversary of The Student Personnel Point of View (1937), we are proud to bring you these voices from our past with reflections on the future through the following videos, as well as the interviews listed above:

  • "The Student Learning Imperative” featuring contributing author George D. Kuh, Chancellor's Professor Emeritus, Indiana University
  • 1987 Chicago ACPA/NASPA Joint Convention opening speech by Melvene D. Hardee
  • “Blacks in American Higher Education” a documentary featuring Marvalene Hughes ACPA President (1987-1988) and Harold Cheatham ACPA President (1995-1996)

ACPA is making these historic videos available to ACPA members online.  To access, login to the ACPA Member Portal, then click "Resources".

On behalf of the entire profession, we extend our sincere thanks to Dennis Roberts for his role in making this possible and for sharing his personal notes and reflections from the past.
