Symposium on Service-Learning

June 3 – 5, 2014 • Louisville, Kentucky, USA

Service-learning “enables colleges and universities to meet their goals for student learning and development while making unique contributions to addressing community needs” (CAS Standards, 2009). This focus on reciprocity–mutual benefit to students and the community–and on reflective practice make service-learning an unparalleled opportunity to engage students in powerful, community-based learning experiences.

ACPA’s Symposium on Service-Learning, co-sponsored by the Commission for Student Involvement, will provide a forum for exchanging innovative ideas and promising practices relevant to service-learning practitioners and scholars. This symposium will be specifically geared toward new to mid-level professionals working with service-learning programs or offices, though interested graduate students, academic faculty, and community partners are welcome to participate.

Phyllis L. Mable New Professionals Institute

June 8-10, 2014 • St. Louis, Missouri, USA

Attrition rates for student affairs professionals are estimated at 50-60% in the first five years (Tull, 2006). Yet, approximately half of ACPA members currently identify as entry-level professionals, and 40% have less than 5 years of experience in student affairs work. As a result, ACPA created the Phyllis L. Mable New Professionals Institute in 2012 to address the knowledge and skills emerging professionals desire as they collectively serve thousands of students on a daily basis.

This institute is named in honor of Phyllis L. Mable, a highly respected educator and leader in student affairs for the past four decades. She served as Vice President for Student Affairs at Longwood University, and Executive Director of the Council for the Advancement of Standards in Higher Education.
