In Memoriam - Richard Basil Caple
December 25, 1930 – January 30, 2019
ACPA-College Student Educators International joins higher education and student affairs colleagues in mourning the passing of Richard (Dick) Basil Caple, Ed.D., former editor of ACPA’s Journal of College Student Development and past president of the Missouri College Personnel Association, on Wednesday, 30 January, 2019. Our condolences and best wishes are extended to Dr. Caple’s family, friends, and members of the University of Missouri, where he was Professor Emeritus.
Dick was a graduate of Cornell College (IA) and a double alumnus of Teacher’s College, Columbia University (NY), where he received an Educational Doctorate in 1961. Having served two years in the U.S. Army Signal Corps, Dr. Caple was employed at New Mexico State University from 1957-1961, at Northwestern State College (OK) from 1961-1967, and finally the University of University of Missouri from 1967-1999, where he held the positions of professor of education, associate director of housing, and director of the University Counseling Center across his career. At the University of Missouri, Dick instituted the Group Counseling Preparation Program.
Dr. Caple was an active member and leader of student affairs associations throughout his career, including service as the 1989-1994 editor of the Journal of College Student Development and as president of the Missouri College Personnel Association. He also published more than 40 articles in refereed journals, one book, and received numerous awards, including receiving the ACPA Foundation’s Diamond Honoree distinction at the 1999 Annual Convention in Atlanta.
We will honor Dick’s life and lasting legacy with a memorial resolution at our Annual Convention in Boston on Tuesday, March 5, 2019.
