Nearly a year ago, ACPA President Kent Porterfield and ACPA Executive Director Cindi Love called for nominations for a Presidential Task Force on Sexual Violence Prevention in Higher Education and received an overwhelming response – 162 nominations. From this large group, a steering committee of 14 was selected by ACPA leadership. This steering committee has convened via conference call monthly since July and met for 2 days in August 2014 at the ACPA International Office in Washington DC. The group coalesced around the following aims:

  • Draft a report with recommendations to share with the ACPA membership prior to the annual convention in Tampa.  During the convention, gather feedback, incorporate it, and submit a final report to the ACPA Governing Board shortly after convention. 
  • Our aim has been to leverage the current campus, media, and governmental attention on compliance to bring greater attention, resources, and focus to prevention of sexual violence.
  • Lay foundation for educating students (learning outcomes), educating college student educators (professional competencies), developing institutional leadership, and providing recommendations for ACPA’s role in advancing efforts to address sexual violence on campus.
  • Use the information gathered and groundwork laid to develop a monograph that includes learning outcomes and professional competencies.  Use the monograph to frame professional development (institutes, webinars, etc.) and resources (connections to other organizations good work, templates for auditing efforts on campus, etc.). The ACPA Sustainability Monograph is a model for this kind of strategy.

This draft represents the Task Force’s effort to bring these ideas to written form and incorporate feedback received from the 162 individuals nominated for the Task Force and from particular ACPA Commissions (Housing and Residence Life, Student Conduct & Legal Issues, and Social Justice Educators) and ACPA Standing Committees. We invite feedback from all ACPA members via this Google form or via the listening session that will be held at the ACPA Convention in Tampa.
