The ACPA18 Annual Convention is about creating relationships and establishing networks with colleagues who share similar passions. One way to foster one’s professional network is to participate in the ACPA18 Common Read, an exciting opportunity to engage with the convention curriculum prior to arriving in Houston, Texas, USA in March!
This year’s Common Read is March, Book Three. In this graphic novel, Congressman John Lewis, a leader in the Civil Rights Movement, collaborates with co-author Andrew Aydin and illustrator Nate Powell to bring the lessons of history to life. Often called “one of the most courageous persons the Civil Rights Movement ever produced," John Lewis has dedicated his life to protecting human rights, securing civil liberties, and building what he calls "the Beloved Community” in America.
March, Book Three is the conclusion of an award-winning trilogy of graphic novels about John Lewis and the struggle for civil rights in the United States during the 1960s. This historical novel is not only beautiful, but timely; its content highlights many of the challenges facing the United States, and the world, today. Topics such as voting rights, racism, police brutality, identity politics, and power dynamics are explored, transcending national borders and challenging readers to confront sensitive issues through images and words.
The book has received the following major awards: 2016 National Book Award Winner for Young People's Literature, 2017 Printz Award Winner, 2017 Coretta Scott King Author Award Winner, 2017 Sibert Medal Winner, 2017 YALSA Award for Excellence in Nonfiction Winner and 2017 Walter Award Winner.

In addition to the Common Read, we encourage convention attendees to review the books and articles of our fantastic speakers, and to take time to learn from the Strategic Imperative for Racial Justice and Decolonization (SIRJD) Caucus Syllabus. The SIRJD Syllabus is a four-month long series of articles, blogs, videos, movies, and podcasts to support members’ development leading into convention caucusing.
The Common Read is just one of the many offerings available as part of the ACPA18 experience, which includes pre-Convention workshops, eight featured speakers that span each day of convention, identity-based caucusing, over 400 educational sessions, Career Central, Marketplace and much more.
