ACPA-College Student Educators International joins higher education and student affairs colleagues in mourning the loss of Margaret J. “Peggy” Barr, Ph.D, ACPA’s 44th  President and leading author, editor, and practitioner, on Thursday, 7 June, 2018. Our condolences and best wishes are extended to Dr. Barr’s family, friends, and to members of the Northwestern University community, where she most recently served as Vice President for Student Affairs and full professor and then Professor Emeritus in the Education and Social Policy program.

Peggy was an active member and leader of student affairs associations throughout her career, including service as 1983-1984 ACPA President and NASPA Foundation President from 1995 to 1997. Since beginning her ACPA membership in 1963, Dr. Barr served the profession as a Commission directorate member and chair, annual convention program chair (1981 in Cincinnati), Media Board member, and as a valued contributor on numerous committees and task forces. From 1986 to 1997, she served the higher education community as Editor-in-Chief of the Jossey-Bass New Directions for Student Services series.

Dr. Margaret J. “Peggy” Barr was awarded the ACPA Foundation Diamond Honoree Award at our 1999 Annual Convention in Atlanta. Peggy is also a past recipient of the ACPA Annuit Coeptis Senior Professional Award, Professional Service Award, Senior Scholar designation, Contribution to Knowledge Award, and the NASPA Contribution to Literature Research Award, Higher Education Award, and Pillar of the Profession honor.

We will honor Peggy’s life and lasting legacy with a memorial resolution at our Annual Convention in Boston on Tuesday, March 5, 2019.
