Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

How do I sign up for office hours?

Use the online scheduling tool (via Sign Up Genius) to make your 1:1 APIDA scholar advising appointment.

Who is this program intended for?
This program is intended for emerging Asian Pacific Islander Desi American (APIDA) scholars in higher education and student affairs. This may include current doctoral and masters students, scholar-activists, and scholar-practitioners in higher education and student affairs who are seeking connection and mentorship with seasoned APIDA scholars.

What do you mean by “emerging scholar”?
We believe there are several ways to be a scholar. To elaborate on the point above, this initiative seeks to engage anyone with an interest in research and/or further academic study, whether you are at the initial exploration stages of thinking about research, or consider yourself well-seasoned.  For instance:

  • Are you a current master’s student? Do you want to explore ways to publish and present your research?
  • Are you a master’s student about to graduate? Are you looking for administrative jobs but also want to explore possibilities to pursue research while working?
  • Are you a current doctoral student? Do you want to talk more with someone about navigating the academy as an APIDA student?
  • Are you currently a working professional? Are you seeking to apply to doctoral programs and want to get advice? Do you want to explore ways to build research into your job?
  • Are you a faculty member? Do you want to connect with others to build a community of scholars, talk about tenure, or discuss navigating the academy?

If you answered “yes” to any of the above, we encourage you to take part! These are just a few examples of topics you could talk about, so be sure to explore all of the scholar bios above to view the whole range of possibilities. If you’re still unsure, send us a message!

Do I have to be interested in studying APIDA issues to participate?
We welcome all research interests! The program is specifically designed to support the scholar-development of APIDA professionals, whatever your scholarly interests lie.

What happens during the 1-1 advising appointments?
Our esteemed scholars will be available to discuss all things related to research and continuing education in higher education and student affairs (e.g., pursuing doctoral studies, shared research interests). Your conversation might center on the relationship between research and practice (e.g., how pursuing or holding a PhD/EdD fits into the landscape of student affairs as a practitioner-oriented field) or be about strategies for resilience in the academy. It’s entirely up to you! We do recommend that you come prepared with two to three questions to maximize your appointment time.
