Presidential Symposium: Creating Higher Education: Compelling Change & Writing Our Story (NOW, more than ever)

Event Overview:
The Presidential Symposium co-sponsored by ACPA and the Association for the Study of Higher Education (ASHE) will bring together higher education practitioners and scholars to begin writing the next chapter of higher education while acknowledging impact, disruption, and possibilities. In this symposium, ACPA President Vernon Wall and ASHE President KerryAnn O’Meara will continue the Presidential Symposium tradition of engaging, meaningful, and cross-functional conversation about the higher education we will collectively and individually create with a particular emphasis on hearing early career voices.
We are excited to offer the Presidential Symposium in a live virtual format. The link to the online event will be emailed to registrants the morning of 8 October 2020 prior to the event beginning.
Graduate degree programs and student affairs divisions are encouraged to gather students and/or colleagues to participate in the live stream. A special group rate of $200 is available at registration. Select the group rate and we will contact the registered group representative to collect details for attendees in the group.
Symposium Components
- Welcome. ACPA President Vernon Wall and ASHE President KerryAnn O'Meara and will welcome virtual attendees to the Presidential Symposium. They will open with reflections on the important role higher education and student affairs professionals have in compelling change now more than ever.
- Paired Conversations. ACPA President Vernon Wall and ASHE President KerryAnn O'Meara will have dynamic conversations with Danielle Morgan Acosta, Luoluo Hong, Robert Brown, and Tim Eatman, four higher education scholars, practitioners, and leaders. Together they will discuss 1) What are the most pressing issues facing higher education? 2) What has shifted our ways of being and our approaches?
- Compelling Change and Writing Our Story. Participants will be guided in an activity of writing their own story of higher education. A time to breathe, reflex, and be creative, a workbook will be provided by email to all participants with guiding questions and prompts.
- Panel Discussion. Panelists will discuss how to write our story during these times of change addressing the following questions: 1) What is important to bring forward as we (re)create higher education and student affairs? 2) What needs to be dismantled, undone, or reconstructed as we (re)create higher education

If you wish to have more people attend as part of your program or division, select to Add Additional Attendees at an additional fee of $10 per registrant.
