Commission for Assessment and Evaluation

Dr. Jessica Turos, Associate Director of the Career Center at Bowling Green State University, provides her takeaways from the Commission for Assessment and Evaluation webinar that was in June 2015.  The title of the webinar was "Framing Assessment for Career Services:  Telling Our Story" and was led by Drs. Julia Panke Makela and Gail S. Rooney.  You can access a copy of the webinar PowerPoint here.  Please read Dr. Turo's top six takeaways from the webinar below:

  1. “Assessment offers opportunities to gather evidence to enhance career development work through a process of continuous improvement as well as highlighting the importance of the functions that career professionals serve in interactions with multiple stakeholders.” (Panke Makela & Rooney, 2014, p. 65)
  2. Framing Assessment for Career Interventions –  continuous improvement and demonstrating value (accountability); career interventions are not one size fits all
  3. Career services can “tell their story” through assessment; showcase the beginning, middle, and end
  4. Common assessment types in career services include: needs assessment, participation assessment (who is and is not attending), satisfaction, outcomes (academic performance indicators, college graduate first destination, learning outcomes)
  5. Assessment of Learning Outcomes for Interventions (ALOI) Cycle steps include: defining context, brainstorming outcomes, writing outcomes statements, connecting theories and professional standards, prioritizing learning outcomes, evaluating learning outcomes, reflecting on results and process, and using learning outcomes assessment
  6. Getting started with assessment in career services – begin small, undertake practical projects, and be realistic
