Call for Chapter Proposals: International Student Mental Well-Being in the U.S.

About the Book:

Current and recent members of the leadership from the ACPA Commission for the Global Dimensions of Student Development are seeking book chapter authors for a book manuscript we plan to propose through the ACPA Books publishing process. The focus of the text will be on international student mental health in the U.S. with the goal of providing an educational tool to support the practice and teaching of a wide audience of higher education professionals including, but not limited to student affairs educators, international student services staff, counseling center staff, academic advisors, student affairs graduate program faculty, and higher education and student affairs graduate students. 

The text will include content highlighting the intersecting identities of international students and how those identities shape international students’ mental well-being and help-seeking behaviors, as well as practical approaches to supporting international students’ mental well-being on an institutional, departmental, or individual level. The content and organization of the text will emerge from the chapter proposal submissions and authors will be supported by book editors in their content development to meet the overall needs of the text.

Proposals can be submitted for three different types of chapters:

  • Research-based chapters (4,500-6,000 words) should focus on the intersecting identities of international students (e.g., sexual orientation, different cultural backgrounds, socio-economic status, immigration status) and how those identities shape international students’ mental well-being

  • Promising practices chapters (4,500-6,000 words) should highlight ways in which higher education professionals can support international students’ mental well-being and either be geared toward a broad audience of higher education professionals or address a specific group of higher education professionals (e.g., Residence Life staff, Counseling Center staff, Academic Advisors).

  • Case study chapters (1,000-1,500 words) should highlight a specific instance or situations related to higher education professional(s) supporting international students’ mental well-being or international students’ experiencing mental health challenges. These case studies should help illustrate the unique experiences of international students and/or ways to support international student mental well-being.

Timeline: 

  • Chapter proposals due July 31, 2020

  • Notification of chapter acceptance and update on ACPA Book publishing process September 15, 2020

  • Completed chapters due December 15, 2020

  • Feedback from book editors March 15, 2021

  • Chapter revisions due May 1, 2021

  • 2nd round feedback from Editor (as needed) July 1, 2021

  • Final chapter revisions due September 30, 2021

  • Book enters production December 1, 2021

Proposal Requirements:

To propose a chapter, please submit a 600-800 word abstract and outline of your chapter by July 31, 2020 to the link below. The abstract should include the chapter title, objectives of the chapter, and how it will inform teaching and practice around issues of international student mental health in the U.S., and an outline of the content. Please include the vitas of all authors with your submission. Submit your chapter proposals by completing this Google Form.

After chapters have been accepted based on the submitted abstract, we will work with ACPA Books to get this publication accepted. Authors will receive information on our status in the ACPA Book publishing process prior to being asked to submit final chapters. 

Final chapter submissions should be between 4,500-6,000 words for research-based and promising-practices chapters or 1,000-1,500 words for case studies and use APA publication style (7th edition) guidelines. Final chapter submissions should also include a brief (~50 words) biography for each chapter author.
