Job Search for International Higher Ed Professionals: A Panel Discussion

The Commission for Global Dimensions of Student Development at ACPA will be hosting our annual panel discussion conversation for international higher education and student affairs professionals who are/will be currently searching for an internship or full-time position in the U.S.

We invite you to hear about the experience of international higher education and student affairs professionals, the unique contributions they bring to the field and the obstacles they have to overcome to navigate the professional world. The audience will hear from four international higher education professionals from different countries, institutions, regions and professional experiences. This session will help you better understand the experiences, successes, and unique perspectives of your international colleagues as they navigate a career in higher education in the U.S. You will also learn about resources and effective strategies for being a supportive colleague and mentor to foreign-born Higher Education professionals

We hope that attendees can leave the space with a sense of affirmation and with a toolbox to navigate their job search.

Name - Abigail Smith

Title - Womens Complex Manager

Institution - American University of Sharjah

Bio - Abigail Smith was born in Ipswich, England and moved to Kingston, Jamaica when she was six with her parents. As an international student she  migrated to the United States in 2011 and attended Randolph College where she graduated with a BA in Sociology with minors in International Relations and American Culture with a focus on Caribbean Relations. During her time at Randolph, Abigail discovered her passion for working with college students and her desire to one day work in the field of student affairs when she returned home to Jamaica. This led her to pursue her M.A in Higher Education and Student Affairs from the University of Connecticut. Abigail most recently worked at Pace University in Westchester, NY as a Residence Director supporting first year students. As of March 2021 Abigail is Womens Complex Manager at American University of Sharjah in the United Arab Emirates.  

 

Name – Kyoungah Lee

Title – International Programming Coordinator & Advisor

Institution – University of Pittsburgh

Bio – Kyoungah Lee is the International Programming Coordinator & Advisor of the Office of Cross Cultural and Leadership Development in the Division of Student Affairs at the University of Pittsburgh. In her current role, she advises six different student organizations and coordinates the Global Ties program that is designed to support international students to experience the best collegiate experience by providing leadership and working opportunities, workshops for student/staff/faculty, retreat with international and domestic students, and cultural immersion trips. She received her M.Ed. from the University at Buffalo (SUNY) and is currently pursuing her Doctor of Education (Ed.D.) in Higher Education Management. Her interest is to bridge the gap in support for international students and help all students to be internationally competent and globally oriented.

 

Name: Haishan Sammy Yang

title: Area Coordinator, Central Campus, UVM Residential Life

bio: Born and bred in Shanghai, China, Sam graduated from Syracuse University with an Education/History degree and obtained license to teach secondary schools in New York State. He would later on find passion in international higher education and got his Masters from Boston College. Currently Sam works at the University of Vermont with the department of residential life. Sam's research interest spans from international students to general student affairs while also exploring the institutional approach for better wellbeing among students. Sam is an advocate for international higher education staff who were foreign-born. Outside of work, Sam is an ACE certified personal trainer, photographer, and hiker. 

 

Name: Sadiq Mohammed

Title: Academic Advisor; Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Leadership Team Member

Institution: Michigan State University

Bio: Sadiq is an academic advisor for the Honors College at Michigan State University. Beyond advising responsibilities, Sadiq also advises a leadership group for high-achieving international students and co-leads Diversity, Equity and Inclusion related initiatives for the college. Additionally, Sadiq is a doctoral student in the Higher Education program at MSU wherein his research focuses on the migration experiences of international students.
