July Washington Update

With the doubling of interest rates on new student loans as of July 1, the House of Representatives passed a bill before the July 4th recess that would shift the student loan interest rates to be tied to the Treasury Bond rates as opposed to Congress setting it on a yearly basis. The Senate has been in tough negotiations on their version of the bill, which would extend the current rates for one year with the goal of overhauling the entire program with the federal government’s Higher Education Reauthorization Act.

U.S. Supreme Court Punts Decision on Affirmative Action

In a much awaited high court ruling, the US Supreme Court in a 7-1 decision, handed down its ruling in Fisher v. University of Texas at Austin (UT), ordering lower courts to take another look at the challenge to the University of Texas's use of race and ethnicity in its admissions process.

Enough Is Enough

Today, April 16, 2013, is the sixth anniversary of the Virginia Tech massacre, the deadliest mass shooting in U.S. history. 32 people were killed and 30 more were injured. How ironic that yesterday at the conclusion of the Boston Marathon, our world experienced another senseless and faceless attack on innocent people in the U.S. It is time for violence in the U.S. to be addressed.
