Identity Performance: Masking Assimilation or Courageous Acts of Authentic Self?
Tuesday, March 31, 2009, 8:45 AM - 10:00 AM
Gaylord National, National Harbor 10
Identity development is a central developmental task college students' face. Recent theorists persuasively argue that identity is multifaceted, intersecting, and socially constructed. In this session, presenters will use identity theory to explore the impact of context on the salience of identity dimensions and identity performance. Initial results from our qualitative inquiry will be shared to stimulate discussion about implications for student development and how to further promote inclusion by understanding the contours of systematic oppression that shape identity performance.

Since that publication’s release, several of the chapter authors have continued their research on Black athletes, gay Black men, and Black male graduate students. This session will provide a sampling of that research and an opportunity to discuss with the researchers the practical applications of those data as well as other session participants’ research.
