Michael Kimmel will present a unique session on gender role issues in educational practice and the impact of male identity development on both men and women.

Michael Kimmel is among the leading researchers and writers on men and masculinity in the world today. The author or editor of more than twenty volumes, his books include Guyland: The Perilous World Where Boys Become Men (2008), Changing Men: New Directions in Research on Men and Masculinity (1987), Men Confront Pornography (1990), The Politics of Manhood (1996), The Gender of Desire (2005), and The History of Men (2005). His documentary history, "Against the Tide: Pro-Feminist Men in the United States, 1776-1990" (Beacon, 1992), chronicled men who supported women’s equality since the founding of the country. This “inspiring, path breaking collection of remarkable documents” (Dissent) was also called “meticulously researched” (Booklist) and a “pioneering volume” which “will serve as an inspirational sourcebook for both women and men.” (Publishers’ Weekly).

Strategies and Recommendations for Working with College Men

Concern about the behavior, development, and academic success of college men has steadily increased within higher education over the past several years. This session will share general recommendations for ways to effectively engage college men based on the findings of two empirical studies of college men’s gender identity development. Attendees will discuss the recommendations and share their own successes and challenges developing programs and interventions designed specifically to foster networks of support for college men’s growth and development.

Masculinities in Higher Education: Theoretical and Practical Considerations Author Panel

The current discourse regarding men and masculinities is stagnated by binary notions of privilege and oppression which fail to advance an understanding of complex lived identities, intersections between identities, and ways in which hegemonic masculinity is constructed. A new book aimed at effectively addressing these shortfalls, published by Routledge, will be introduced. In this session, editors and chapter authors will discuss empirical evidence, theoretical support and developmental interventions for working with college men in and out of the classroom.

Do Black Men and Women Experience College Differently?

Black men enroll in lower numbers and are retained at lower rates that Black women and cannot be part of the diverse campus community if not fully present on campus. This session presents the analysis of five years of student responses to the College Students Experiences Questionnaire (CSEQ) by Black men and women to determine what different retention efforts are warranted. Suggestions (Ideas) for particularly retaining Black men (Results) will be discussed.

"Putting My Man Face On": College Men's Gender Identity Development

This program will explore a theory of college men’s gender identity development that emerged as a result of a research study of college men’s experiences as men conducted through a social justice theoretical lens. The participants’ perspectives on how they understand themselves as men, how those understandings have changed over time, and what has influenced those changes will be shared through video vignettes. Implications for fostering college men’s development and how patriarchy and privilege are learned, reinforced, and perhaps transcended.

College Men and Masculinities: About the Book

In this session, the presenters will discuss their newly published book, College Men and Masculinities: Theory, Research, and Implications for Practice. The presenters will have a facilitated dialogue with the attendees about the reasons that compelled them to produce the book and the ways it can be used to guide student affairs educators’ work with college men. New concepts, insights, and implications that are offered in the book will also be shared and discussed.
